Stat Attack: The most popular compilation games

According to my calculations – or more accurately – my SQL queries on the ZXDB* datase, there have been 4,232 games on ZX Spectrum compilations. But only 2,807 are unique.

Which means many have appeared on one, two, three and more. But which games have appeared the most compilations?

There are 42 games that have appeared on five compilations, ranging from the well known coin op classics like Bomb Jack, Chase HQ and Ghosts n’ Goblins to less expected titles such as Show Jumping, GBA Championship Basketball and Game Over. But five appearance apparently isn’t a lot…

Ten games have appeared on six different compilations each. But surprisingly they are mostly made up of sports and budget titles like Ian Botham’s Test Cricket and Championship Jet Ski Simulator. Cauldron II and Ghouls n’ Ghosts add some glitz though and we do also have the excellent Winter Games.

But better than those, we have another ten games that have appeared seven times. There are still budget offerings like Pinball and Fruit Machine Simulators, but we also have classics like Dizzy, Exolon and Leaderboard.

Taking the step up to eight appearances however, we only have two games. Both from compilation masters U.S. Gold, Kung Fu Master and Spy Hunter would not necessarily be first choice when we named our favourite coin ops, but they were obviously big sellers and U.S. Gold were masters at cashing in on profitable IP!

Top of the pile though, with nine compilations we have another U.S. Gold arcade conversion. An Atari coin-op that probably does fit the billing…

Gauntlet has appeared on the likes of Arcade Force Four, Solid Gold, Boots Arcade 6-Pack and Kixx Multimixx 4. An immensely playable dungeon crawler, we reviewed Gauntlet (and The Deeper Dungeons) in episode 2 of the ZX Spectrum Compilation Chart Challenge over on YouTube.
