Review: Now Games (1985, Virgin Games)

Released in 1985, Now Games was Virgin’s attempt to muscle in on the burgeoning compilation scene, gathering 6 previously released games with a pretty sweet price point of £8.95.

The undoubted jewel of Now Games’ crown was Lords of Midnight. Mike Singleton’s fantasy theme strategic-adventure was still available at a higher price than the compilation and had received numerous accolades from the gaming press since its release.

But what did the magazines of the day think? Well it was pretty unanimous that Now Games was tremendous value and whilst most called out Falcon Patrol II as the weak point of the compilation, the inclusion of Lords of Midnight and Pyjamarama made it a must purchase for those who didn’t already own the games.

Our review agreed giving FPII just 5 out 10, but with 6s for Arabian Nights and Strangeloop, 7 for Brian Bloodaxe and 8s for Lords of Midnight and Pyjamarama, the compilation averaged out at 6.67 points.

Whilst only a single jewel case, we were impressed with the packaging and the inclusion of a separate instruction sheet, so awarded that 7 out of 10.

To work out the value we divide the price (£8.95) by the total points the game received (40) and that gives us a ‘pence per point’ of 22p, which is enough for 8 points out of 10.

These scores are then put through our algorithm to give Now Games a total score of 70%

That score is enough for Now to receive the very first ZXCCC Megapack badge.
